Iran. Disertiamo la guerra! – Iran.Let’s desert the war!

War is never the answer. International solidarity. Desertion

War is never the answer. International solidarity. Desertion

The recent attack on Iran carried out by the United States and Israel on February 28 is neither an isolated act nor a historical accident. It is yet another well-planned manifestation of an imperial logic that disguises aggression as defense, supremacy as security, war as a moral necessity, and capitalist imperialism as democracy. We know that every power, when it strikes, invokes the need for prevention; every bomb is carefully cloaked in technical, surgical, and inevitable language—and even words of peace. But we already know who will pay the price for such violence; the victims are always the same: children, workers, the poor, young people sent to their deaths, families losing their homes and futures, and oppressed peoples. And we also know that the chaos following this aggression will fuel new wars and further fanaticism.

Regimes can only be opposed and overthrown by their own people, and it is certain that even the popular movements that have opposed the Iranian regime in recent years will be swept away by American imperialist arrogance. Let it be clear: there are no humanitarian wars, nor are there any liberating bombings. Wars are political choices, not natural phenomena. There is a global structure of domination that feeds on fear, nationalism, and voluntary submission. Governments speak of existential threats, but the only permanent threat to the people is precisely the continuous and historical intertwining created by states between military power, economic interests, mafias, and media propaganda.

True security stems from social justice, cooperation among peoples, and an end to the economic exploitation that fuels conflict. True prevention lies in dismantling the state structures that generate war: military bases, the military-industrial complex, alliances based on the threat of constant conflict, and all repressive state laws that target any form of dissent.

Wars must be met with desertion. To desert today means, above all, to desert propaganda. It means rejecting ethnic and religious hatred. It means rejecting the rhetoric of inevitable war, rejecting the fear of true freedom. It means supporting conscientious objection, protecting those who oppose imperialism, and building grassroots international solidarity networks. It means opposing the militarization of our societies and our territories—from Birgi to MUOS and Sigonella—and defending spaces of autonomy, mutual aid, and direct organization.

We unequivocally condemn all forms of imperialism, regardless of the flag or state behind them. We denounce the hypocrisy of those who speak of international law while trampling on it. And we remember that no people are our enemies.

If there is a flame to be lit, it is that of solidarity among the oppressed.

If there is a rebellion to be waged, it is against blind obedience.

If there is a revolution to be prepared, it is one that makes war impossible because it makes domination over our lives impossible.

May consciences awaken. Let fear turn to rage. Let those in power know they can no longer count on our passivity and our fear of being free.

Against every state. Against every regime.

Against imperialist war: Desertion, International Solidarity.

Only a society of free and equal people will sweep away all imperialism.

I nostri pensieri vanno a chi è caduto difendendosi.

LET’S ABOLISH THE ARMIES! LET’S STOP WARS! LET’S UNMASK NATIONALISMS!

LET’S ABOLISH THE ARMIES! LET’S STOP WARS! LET’S UNMASK NATIONALISMS!

The Italian Anarchist Federation reaffirms its support for the [Italian] Antimilitarist Assembly to build a vast anti-war movement, unitary and independent of the parties, against the warmongering policies of governments. We reaffirm the importance of supporting the struggles against the militarization of schools and universities, the struggles against military installations, production of weapons and military bases that are ongoing from Friuli to Sicily, from Piedmont to Tuscany, the initiatives of workers against the production and trafficking of weapons, and of enhancing solidarity with deserters from all wars.

The world is once again approaching a nuclear catastrophe, a renewed risk that is being anticipated by many conflicts and massacres that, although taking place on smaller scales, do not cease to impress for their tragic nature. Among the many factors that have led to this dramatic situation, there is the growing warmongering insanity of the ‘Western’ and ‘Eastern’ ruling classes, which are made up of increasingly incompetent and unlikely people whose charlatanism rivals and sometimes surpasses their lust for power and profit, the latter increasingly based on the war industry.

On the one hand, in the so-called West, increasingly explicit elaborations by politicians and intellectuals from the liberal areas and beyond are drawing the potential scenarios of a new world war. For them, the so-called ‘free world’, an expression already in use in the decades that saw the world divided into two Blocs, is fighting an existential battle against the autocracies of the rest of the planet, identified with new orientalist stereotypes as the place of origin of the threats that may destroy our alleged ‘civilization’. In this both toxic and Manichean narrative, allied nations that share the values of liberal democracy such as Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, or even the so-called democratic opposition in countries such as Myanmar, are styled as fighting the same global battle of the ‘good guys’ against the ‘evil’. By the same logic, even the fundamentalists of HTS in Syria have been enlisted on the side of the ‘good guys’.

The current Italian government is fully involved in this race for disaster, characterizing its foreign policy in an aggressive sense. This discourse serves first of all as a pretext to justify the increase in military spending and the production of deathly weapons as something even virtuous in the name of the alleged need for ‘defense’, and to dismiss pacifism and anti-militarism as obsolete and inadequate tools to resolve the new ‘practical’ urgencies – obviously, according to a single narrative. At all latitudes, nationalist propaganda fuels conflicts and poisons public debate by erecting walls between the oppressed classes.

In the case of Palestine, this implies a constant minimization of Israeli war crimes and of the genocide underway in Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon to the point that even European governments have relativized the arrest warrant of the International Criminal Court against the criminal Netanyahu after applauding the one against the criminal Putin.

As for Ukraine, there is an international design aimed at enlisting leftist and autonomous movements, including anarchists or self-styled ones, in the war front against the tyrant. This narrative is based on the rhetoric of national resistance to invasion, in which the end justifies any means (including nuclear war in the most extreme cases), with the aim of splitting pacifist and anti-militarist forces by defusing one of the fights that have historically been most effective in Western countries: opposition to wars and military spending accompanied by objection, refusal to fight in wars and desertion in connection with wider social struggles.

Combatant rhetoric has been abundantly deployed in the last three years by self-styled anti-fascist and anti-authoritarian sectors whose slogans, analyses and public documents do not add anything to Western and liberal war propaganda and to local nationalist narratives, in the complete absence of any qualifying point in terms of class or anarchist readings of the situation. Without claiming, as per our founding principles, any monopoly of anarchism, it is evident to us that such nationalist, militarist and liberal degenerations do not have anything to do with our idea of anarchism and should therefore be addressed like those of any other political force opposed to us: in the acknowledgment of the different positions, without any confusion or formal association between irreconcilable political programs and projects.

On the other side of this front line, the project of a ‘multipolar’ world promoted by some governments within the BRICS+, which is nothing more than a different imperialist program, has fatally seduced remains of Bolshevism and sectors of the left that have gone so far as to consider bloodthirsty dictators such as Putin in Russia, Maduro in Venezuela and various associates as ‘comrades’ or almost. According to the same logic, there are those who legitimize the religious fanatics, misogynists, homophobes and murderers of groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah, or the bureaucrats of more or less ‘national’ corrupt authorities, as the protagonists of an alleged resistance to Israel. While the misery and contradictions of these discourses are evident, we can only strongly reaffirm the founding principle of the coherence of means and ends, according to which our anti-militarism can in no case be separated from our anti-authoritarian, anti-clerical, anti-patriarchal and anti-capitalist inspiration.

In future international scenarios, it will certainly not be the installation of old reactionaries such as Donald Trump that will bring an alternative to the progressive warmongering insanity of his predecessor Joe Biden and most of the Western ruling class, nor will a possible military success (or non-failure) of the ‘non-Western’ world bring more justice or question capitalism, coloniality of power and imperialism.

We must not forget, however, the other hundred or so conflicts still underway at the global level, especially in the Global South, including, as our comrades from Brazil and Latin America remind us, the genocidal war that has been going on for over 500 years in their parts against women, against the poor and against indigenous and Afro-descendant communities. If we recognize the still current need for anti-colonial and decolonial action, it is important to specify that this must in no way lead to new forms of nationalism, communitarianism or essentialism of civilization. The concept of the individual remains central against any degeneration that leads to ethnic, racial and cultural essentialisms, even if based on the idea of ‘peoples’. These latter are always characterized internally by dynamics of inequality and oppression in terms of class, gender and every possible form of discrimination and marginalization.

Despite all the difficulties, there are important spaces for action and organization from below in which our contribution can be decisive in building a social opposition to war and militarism. A central point of our action has been our support for the general strikes of conflictual and grassroots syndicalism, which in recent years have associated social struggles for salary with an anti-militarist approach against wars and the war economy, consistent with our idea that closely links an anti-militarist perspective to a class-struggle perspective.

A major cultural initiative is also needed to counter the militarist propaganda that is served up daily, in a more or less explicit way, in schools and in public communication in increasingly pervasive ways, ready to exploit all places of education to enhance a discourse that presents the supposedly ‘good’ face of the State armed forces as if they were humanitarian enterprises.

In this sense, our support for revolutionary defeatism, refusal, objection, desertion and draft evasion on all sides of the war fronts remains fundamental, particularly at a time when, to mention but one of the most well-known fronts, even the Russian and Ukrainian military commands recognize desertion as a real problem that hinders their respective death programs. This support is developed within the framework of our internationalist commitment, in particular in the context of the International of Anarchist Federations, which must be developed by promoting new initiatives to deconstruct borders and contest any idea of nationalism and territorial sovereignty of the nation-state or any other entity that aspires to become a state, replacing it with new mechanisms of international solidarity and universal sisterhood/brotherhood.

In the context of actions carried out consistently from below and outside the parties and from the control of the institutions, we need to foster dialogue with all those groups and movements that share our anti-militarist intransigence, building functional alliances on objectives that are well-defined and consistent with all the assumptions that we have expressed in this document. Only by developing and generalizing bottom-up actions based on these assumptions will it be possible to truly renew hope in a world of freedom and equality instead of the one of death, destruction and permanent war that capitalism and the state shamelessly impose on us.

CLIMATE CRISIS AND DIRECT ACTION

CLIMATE CRISIS AND DIRECT ACTION

The debate on the environmental question, climate change and the movements of struggle developed at the Carrara Congress highlighted that the very violent acceleration of the indiscriminate exploitation of the planet impressed by capitalism is producing pollution, environmental devastation and a rise in temperatures with deadly consequences on the environmental and social level. It follows that there can be no capitalist solution to a disaster caused by capitalism.

The mitigation strategies offered by governments and transnational corporations are mere greenwashing operations. Capitalism is also able to take advantage from the climate crisis. Governments and supranational institutions wear environmentalist masks to conceal their unwillingness to change things.

The only viable way to stop destruction is direct action from below and the transformation of the mode of production and distribution to be no longer oriented towards individual profit but towards the satisfaction of the needs of humanity. This also implies strengthening ongoing debates with those parts of the scientific community that study and assess climate change, sharing valuable tools against climatic denialism.

We call for greater FAI’s commitment to the field of information and the fight against climate change and those who produce it.

AGAINST SOCIAL AND POLITICAL REPRESSION

AGAINST SOCIAL AND POLITICAL REPRESSION

A parliament with a neo-fascist majority is about to approve a law (known as DDL1660) that aims to criminalize any form of dissent and limit everybody’s freedoms, including twenty-four items such as new crimes, sanctions and aggravating circumstances for existing crimes.

This new law is part of the exclusively repressive strategy with which the Meloni government wants to suppress any form of social and political opposition in Italy, and which has already seen the “anti-rave” decrees, Cutro decrees, Caivano decrees and the new traffic laws.

We are confronted with the acceleration of a repressive pathway that has been implemented by all successive governments, whose sole objective has been the progressive contraction of the spaces of freedom and social and political action. The anarchist movement is particularly under attack, and is being hit with all the means at the disposal of the state not only for its presence in situations of struggle but also at the level of freedom of expression. There is an increasingly pervasive use of control technologies and police measures: the presumption of guilt allows for the control of anyone regardless the commission of any crime. Urban Daspos [an administrative measure preventing somebody from attending certain places on the ground of arbitrary assessment of “danger”] and expulsion orders are imposed on the mare basis of alleged “social dangerousness”.

Even at the local level we are witnessing an increase in repressive situations. With the excuse of urban decorum, also in function of tourist exploitation, certain categories of “undesirable” people also identified through ethnic profiling, are being expelled from some urban areas. In the city of Rome, with the jubilee of the Catholic Church, these measures will see a certain increase.

The presence of the military in the streets remind us that the big problem of governments is the internal enemy: the proletarians, the exploited, the migrants, the non-homologated, the poor, over whom the “criminal law of the enemy” is exercised. The doors of prisons and CPRs [expulsion camps for migrants] are always open for them, and now exported across borders in an absurd escalation of hatred towards people who only seek to escape from hopeless situations.

The anarchists of the FAI confirm their commitment to the struggle for freedom in a society without controllers or prisons.

DECLARAÇÃO DA INTERNACIONAL DE FEDERAÇÕES ANARQUISTAS – ATENAS, 5 DE NOVEMBRO DE 2023

The Commission of Relations of the International of Anarchist Federations gathered in Athens on 4-5 November 2023 to discuss and share thoughts and practices of our Federations. Currently, we are particularly active in antimilitarist activities, in a period that is characterised by the intensification of wars, of which the most known, such as the conflicts in Gaza, Ukraine or Sudan should not make forget the globality of the problem.

War is never a solution, but a way for capitalism and the state to reproduce forms of domination, exploitation, patriarchy and oppression. War is the exacerbation of the violence of power and hierarchy. Many people discuss war crimes, we say that war is always a crime. All wars are against the people and use arguments such as nationalism, putting oppressed people the ones against the others, trying to create illusions of common interests of all classes to undermine social conflicts through war propaganda.

We anarchists oppose all borders, states, armies and the very principle of territorial sovereignty. We propose our ideas of international solidarity, actively supporting all the victims of wars, and all those who refuse wars from all sides: objectors, deserters, saboteurs and people who escape the wars.

We support all antimilitarist actions that are in agreement with our anarchist principles, as well as those groups, individuals and collectives who resist the war making social work, helping people, promoting social struggles and continuing to spread anti-authoritarian cultures despite the war.

In addition of making international diffusion of these antimilitarist activities as a work of counter-information before war propaganda though their journals, radios and medias, our federations are promoting activities such as:

The ‘Worldwide days of action against any war and militarism’ from 17-25 November 2023 https://de.indymedia.org/node/306630

The antimilitarist fortnight of Publico in Paris from 5 to 26 November 2023 http://www.librairie-publico.info/?p=8835

and the Antimilitarist Assembly in Italy. https://umanitanova.org/event/milano-assemblea-antimilitarista-4/

to give just a few examples.

No war among peoples, no peace among classes.
