France: Nationwide Cost-of-Living Protests & Student Demonstrations

17/10/2026

France is experiencing major nationwide protests and strikes today, Saturday, October 17, 2026, driven by widespread public anger over inflation, purchasing power, fuel prices, and student/study conditions.

The movement brings together a broad coalition including the revived “Yellow Vests” (Gilets Jaunes), labor unions (such as the CGT and Solidaires), farmers, taxi/VTC drivers, and high school and university students.

The main Parisian procession started at Place de la République at 2:00 PM and marched along a route directed by the Police Prefecture toward Place de Clichy (passing via Boulevard de Magenta, Boulevard de Rochechouart, and Boulevard de Clichy).

Heavy security forces and riot police have been deployed. Clashes and tear gas have been reported in Paris as well as other cities like Lille and Strasbourg, with authorities logging at least 166 arrests nationwide so far.

At the request of the police prefecture, around 25 metro stations in central Paris (particularly near government offices and key squares) have been temporarily closed.

Road-transport unions and taxi drivers have also threatened slow-roll blockades affecting major roadways, the périphérique, and airport access routes.
